teach me mommy :: america
Although these pictures look like they belong filed under July for Independence Day, it actually was last weeks teach me mommy school on America.
(Plus it is only in my dreams that all my photographs would be filed so neatly month by month like that.)

the A is for America agenda:
1. STORY BOOK and COLORS
since I don't really have any story books about America, I just decided to read Margaret Brown's (of the famed Goodnight Moon) World of Color. I love all her books.

since I don't really have any story books about America, I just decided to read Margaret Brown's (of the famed Goodnight Moon) World of Color. I love all her books.
and one thing you know about me if you've been here long, is I'm pretty good at stretching whatever we've got on hand to fit the theme...
sometimes this makes for verrry long stretches! Luckily the kids never seem to notice...
anyway, the way I stretched this one, was when we got to a page about one of the flags colors, Ava Carmel had to raise her hand.
2. FLAG AND PATTERNS
2. FLAG AND PATTERNS
we looked at a real flag and talked about the patterns of the stripes and then ava colored one of her own, cut it out and taped to a flagpole (stick)
3. STAR SHAPE GAME
each of those yellow or white stars taped to the doors had a different activity on the back, for example "do a somersault" or "sing head shoulders knees and toes" or "do ten jumping jacks"
4. PRESIDENTS OF AMERICA
briefly talked about different president and showed ava pictures from my Abraham Lincoln book. pointed out that great people lots of times start in small places, like a teeny tiny log cabin, and looked at pictures of how small it was.
5. STAR NECKLACE
i cut out a bunch of stars and let ava use the hole punch and thread them onto a ribbon.
6. LETTER A PRACTICE (same as last week)
played a little online A game on starfall, practiced writing a's (worksheets can be found here), played a visual recognition game on our little chalkboard (I write a bunch of different letters all over the board and she circles all the A's and a's. Then we count them up.)
7. PRETZEL LOG CABIN SNACK

we made a tiny little cabin from graham crackers and chocolate frosting and pretzels. she spent a long time on this! while i munched on graham cracking frosting sandwiches. i love those things.
