a red string.

I thought this idea I saw today at oh happy day was so perfect... a trail of red string leading to a surprise birthday picnic.  It made me think of two things.

First, the red yarn treasure hunt at my 5th birthday party.  My mom had woven several looong strands or red yarn all over the house--up the stairs, around the library couch, down the stairs, around the kitchen table...  Each child took a string and followed it through the house to the end of the string, on which there was a box of those delicious cracker jacks tied.  (Do they still make those little individual boxes of cracker jacks?)  It was so delightfully fun it has been imprinted on my brain forever!

Second, I am pretty good at making birthdays and holidays memorable for the kids, but not so great when it comes to grown up holidays, like anniversaries and Jimmy's birthday.  I am inspired to make these days a little extra special--this idea shows it doesn't have to be big.  This thoughtful surprise was so simple and set the day apart as a special one.
