summer adventures for june.

On a little whim, we started something last summer called Summer Adventures.  We made so many great memories and had the best summer ever!  So we decided a repeat was definitely in order.

I start doing things like this because way too many times at the end of the summer (or whatever season is currently ending), I think, "boo! we never did _____" (insert activity you wished you had done before school, homework and piano practice began ruling your life again.)

Summer Adventures makes sure we get those fun activities on the calendar, and get out to enjoy our lovely city and mountains and parks.  We only have ten weeks of summer vacation so it helps us live in the moment, if you will.

For our field trips, I plan one or two outings each week.  We meet with friends or my sisters or just go by ourselves.  I like to plan several where it's just us--just me and the kids talking and making memories together.  Even though I love to be with all my friends and sisters, I want the kids to have childhood memories of our little family spending time together too.

The movie matinee part, is watching a movie one afternoon a week, that is loosely tied to the weekly theme.  But by calling it the "movie matinee" . . . suddenly watching a movie is so. much. more. thrilling!  They spend at least half an hour arranging their blankets and pillows and stuffed animals for the show.  Plus, all kinds of treats are available for purchase for only two workshop dots :)

And bonus: I get two quiet uninterrupted hours all to myself.  Unless I watch the movie too.  But I'm not really much of a movie watcher lately.  Unless BBC appears somewhere in the title. . .  followed by Downton Abbey.
