where or where should our new staircase go?
We are on the final stretch of completing our house plans--at least to the point where we can submit them to the city. It has taken us forever to get the details ironed out. There are so many quirky rules and regulations for renovating a home in these historic neighborhoods.
And since we don't want to extend the footprint of the original home, it's been like trying to figure out a puzzle to get everything we want, to fit in the space we have to work with. But it's been worth all the late nights, drawing and redrawing because I think we've finally got it!

Two places that have been especially difficult to figure out are: the new location of one central staircase, and the configuration of the master bathroom. (More on the master bathroom later.) For now, let's concentrate on the stair situation.
Currently there are two sets of stairs, one in the front of the house and one in the back of the house. Neither location is ideal for what we are envisioning for the home.
Since we are adding a second story, we want the stairs going to the basement and to the upper floor located next to one another. First because it takes up less space, and second, that way the basement won't have that old-house-disconnected-basement feeling.
Plus, the house is small! No need for two staircases. Bigger need for laundry room and mudroom!

We have considered so many different locations. . . We nixed this one Jimmy's drawing here on the wall, because it made the windows look too cramped and the risers felt a little too high.
To help us visualize we draw or tape our ideas on the floors and walls. . . It's a great way too help yourself visualize renovations or even furniture you're thinking about purchasing--just tape out the dimensions onto the floor.
So after lots of back and forth, sketching and taping, we have finally settled on the new location. Here, they will be centrally located within the home. The railings will all be open as much as possible, to give an open connected feeling between all the levels of the home. And when all is said and done, it will look very similar to this inspiration picture below.
