Plant a seed and it will grow

When Ashlyn was three, my super cool neighbor (and visiting teacher) introduced me to the teach me mommy school preschool program. Because I want my kids to think I am the smartest person in the world, I was all over it and decided I wanted to be their first "teacher".Now this is how I make it work for us. I am all for simplification, so first, I consider what's going on in our lives at the moment. If it's spring and planning a garden is on my to do list, you can be sure teach me mommy will be planned around that.
Last week, we learned about seeds. Here's the rundown.TEACH ME MOMMY - SEEDS
-read Muncha! Muncha! Muncha! by Candace Fleming
-explained (by drawing a picture) what a seed is & how it turns into a plant
-looked at the roots of some plants & talked about their purpose
-noticed how different all the seeds look and decided which ones to plant
-planted some seeds that needed to be started indoors
-created a picture from seeds
-ate some chocolate covered sunflower seeds (these might not sound good, but give 'em a whirl cuz they are YUM--and slightly addicting I might add)

I don't follow it exactly the way it's outlined in the book. I only do it once a week (instead of three--that's just craz-i-ness), and I usually combine 2-3 chapters for a lesson. My kids love, love, LOVE teach me mommy school and it's a perfect way to make sure they get a good chunk of quality one-on-one.

thanks for this post. what a fantastic idea. I especially like the one on one time with your kids. you are one smart mommy. so when do I get to sign up and come to your class too? ;)
